here are some elements of the course

I’d like to share a glimpse of how the course is taking shape so you can understand it more fully and, I hope, feel more connected and jump into the work and/or refer men who may benefit.

We begin each session with mindfulness breathwork and an invitation to moan, groan, sigh - to vocalize.  Resistance of some kind often arises with this exercise (maybe you’re hearing a reaction in yourself right now!) This helps to reveal how deeply we’ve been conditioned to “shush” ourselves. This also gives us a clear reference point to track how trauma has impacted the vagus nerve, emotional expression, and regulation. Men often report feeling numb, tense, anxious, angry, or shut down. That’s our starting point each week.

I also begin the course by normalizing trauma. At the heart of that message, we look at the common trauma that everyone has experienced to some extent by living in a traumatized world.

From there, and throughout the weeks, we move through the following material:

  • Self-compassion (Kristin Neff: self-kindness vs. self-judgment, mindfulness vs. over-identification, common humanity vs. isolation)

  • Patriarchy’s impact (bell hooks: how boys are told to “stop crying” within imperialist, white-supremacist, capitalist systems)

  • Shame & vulnerability (Brené Brown: facing shame and reclaiming an inherent belonging)

I also draw on somatic trauma experts (Ogden, Siegel, Van der Kolk), relationship teachers (the Gottmans, Esther Perel), nondual spirituality (Richard Rohr), and eco-centric practices (Bill Plotkin). Bringing together all of these voices to help create a safe container where men take courageous steps toward wholeness.
